If I concentrate on gaining territory I can somewhat match the size of the AI opponents but my military takes a major blow and I cant even defend myself against Barbarians! If I concentrate on my military, the number of cities I end up having is too small to actually build up a sizeable army. I was surprised to find that even on Novice the game is very hard. I was was just trying some of the games on mintPortal and since I dont have OpenGL and have had some experience with Sid Meiers Civilization.
